New Starter Information

Welcome to Reception at Crayke. Starting school is a big step and we make sure every child feels safe, known and excited to learn from day one. Our small, friendly school community and Christian values of Respect, Friendship, Forgiveness and Determination shape everything we do.

What a typical day looks like

• Warm welcome and calm routines to help children settle quickly.
• A mix of adult-led phonics (Little Wandle), early maths (we follow the White Rose Reception approach) and continuous provision so children learn through play and purposeful activities.
• Daily outdoor learning — our grounds and OPAL approach mean children spend regular time outside, exploring, building resilience and developing physical skills.
• Shared snack, story and collective worship that reflect our Christian vision and help children grow socially and spiritually.

How we teach and support learning

• Experienced Reception staff use observation and careful assessment to move learning on for every child.
• Classroom activities are practical and play-based so children develop early reading, number sense and independence.
• We adapt learning for children with additional needs and work closely with families and external specialists to make sure every child can access the curriculum and thrive.

Working with families

• We build strong links with parents and carers — regular updates, informal conversations at the start and end of the day, and family events that welcome you into school life.
• Transition is gradual and personalised: short stay and play sessions, new starter visits and close communication help children from a range of settings feel ready quickly.

What children take away

• Confidence, curiosity and practical skills for learning.
